Airbnb for Chickens 🐔

5 minute wacky businesses, you can tell your buddies about 🧠

Ever reallyyyy wanted to rent a chicken coop before? Yeah, me neither. But apparently some people out there do. Let me tell you about RentACoop, oh and did I mention they make $10M annually?

Chicken ownership funnel 🧐

$10 million a year, from backyards to busy chicken sanctuaries. That's right—$10M. Tyler Phillips and Diana Samata founded RentACoop in 2012. This idea for an eccentric business really stemmed from a pure love of fresh eggs and sustainable living. Nothing more really. The element that caught my eye was how the business developed into a chicken ownership funnel…

RentACoop started out by simply renting out chicken coops. They then went on to design their own line of chicken coop products and renting these out to customers. The pivot came when they decided to sell the chicken coops outright, with a selection of items you would need along with the coop, from spare parts, waterers all the way through to chicken feed. They now have ownership instruction guides, an owners blog and much more. Funnelling people from interest to ownership.

What are the nuggets? 💎

🐔 Innovative Product Design: They didn’t just rent out any old coops. Their designs are predator-proof, easy to clean, and, most importantly, chicken-friendly. RentACoop are HOT on feedback too, solidifying themselves as a company that cares.

🐔 Education & Support: RentACoop didn’t just drop off a coop and run. They provided comprehensive support including how-to guides, video tutorials, and a helpline. This fostered community trust and loyalty, this Is super clear in their Instagram comments.

🐔 Strategic Partnerships: Partnering with schools and community centres, they introduced chicken-keeping programs. This not only raised awareness but created a new customer base. They became a source of wisdom in the community.

Figures laid out 💵

🐔 Founded: 2012

🐔 Revenue: $10 million+ per/y

🐔 Pricing: $50 - $200 per rental period or $200 for an outright purchase

🐔 Celebrity Endorsement: Even Martha Stewart has rented a RentACoop chicken coop!

I had to enhance this image, if the chickens look scary, that’s why

What’s the cherry on top? 🍒

They made a day: Viral "Chicken Adoption Day". This is genius IMO, the idea is simple yet powerful: organize events where people can adopt rescued hens and give them a new home in their backyards (and hopefully buying a new coop at the same time).

My personal thoughts 💭

This is one hell of a middle-America side hustle. The pivot is the gem in my opinion, renting coops > designing coops > selling coops > creating a community. They went from barely in the industry, to one of the biggest players. That’s why they make $10M+ annually, not anything else.

This is a massive under-the-radar business. Plus, imagine being at a party and saying “Yeah it’s like Airbnb for chickens…”

That’s pretty awesome in my eyes.

See ya tomorrow folks! 👋
